How to enable USB Support in VirtualBox for your SmartHome
1. Start VirtualBox
2. Select the VM you want to add USB support in but do not start it
3. Click on Devices, USB, USB Settings
4. Click on Ports
5. Click on USB
6. Check the box beside USB Controller
7. Select USB 3.0 (xHCI Controller)
8. Click on top icon beside USB Device Filters to add default filter
9. You should see New Filter 1 now show up in USB Device Filters window
10. Click on Ok
11. You should now see USB support available when you start the VM you just enable USB Support on.
12. This will need to be done for each VM where you want USB support in

With a combination of the latest VirtualBox and or MAC OS X/Windows, you may not be able to use the SD card slot on your computer to pass files to/from a VM. The work around is to get a USB card reader and put the SD/microSD card in that. After inserting the USB, you may get a prompt as to having the device accessible via the Host or Guest VM. Select Guest VM.

This will also work with the USB to Serial adapter that I use for accessing network equipment. This is how you can get a serial port added to a VM. In the case of Windows 10, it automatically downloaded the needed device driver. Using a USB to Serial Adapter gives you an option to use a dial up modem or other devices that require a serial port to work with Windows or other OS that you are using in a VM.

================================================
*** Show Notes, Links and Resources ****
Here are the items mentioned in this video -

Rocketek 11 in 1 USB 3.0 Memory Card Reader/Writer
https://amzn.to/2YvFQkY

Plugable USB to Serial Adapter Compatible with Windows, Mac & Linux
https://amzn.to/2HOQdv9

Kingston A400 SSD 240GB
https://amzn.to/2YfpqwR

Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD / 2.5-Inch SATA External Shockproof Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure
https://amzn.to/2U7zWqO

➥➥➥ SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS ➥➥➥
Never miss a video about creating your own smart home
Subscribe ⇢ http://ronaldnutter.com/subscribe

To listen to an audio version of this episode while driving, TechBytes with Ron Nutter is available on
iTunes, Google Podcasts, Stitcher and TuneIn.
