machete with fire kit #survivalsaturday #machete #firekit #bushcraft #survival #fire #gethomebag
In this video i go over what i believe to be an original idea. I originally put together this machete with fire kit for my bushcraft gear i use around the house when walking in the woods. Its super lightweight and very capable for processing wood for building fires, creating debris shelters, and other bushcraft camp chores. i fell in love with its versatility and light weight so much that i decided to add it to my vehicle get home bags. Being a long distance hiker, if you know me in real life, you know i am one of those gram pinchers that keeps my gear as light as possible because light means fast and fast means nimble and being fast and nimble means you can get home faster and safer. So a lot of thought went into this kit.

So in this kit, you basically have a machete, sheath, sharpening stone, ferro rod, metal tin with pre-shaved fatwood (the metal tin can also be used for making char cloth or other char material), a plasma lighter with a whistle and length of cordage that could be used to make a bow drill or possibly shelter or replace a broken shoe lace. There is enough space in the pocket that holds the metal tin to put a hank of paracord if you wanted to. The machete works very well with the ferro rod also.

The way that I would use this kit is to use the machete for processing dead trees down into firewood, using the blade to scrape tinder, which I would then light if I wanted to be fancy with the ferrocerium rod but otherwise use the plasma lighter. And if it was pouring down rain, or my hands or material was so wet that it would be questionable to get a fire going, then I have the pre-shaven fatwood as a backup sure fire way to get a fire.

I know a lot of bushcrafters/survivalist have never done long distance hiking, and a lot of people don't know you can get hypothermia in the summer time. I have had it. So having a quick way to build a fire, and get warm/dry even when its pouring down rain is always at the top of my list of things to carry which also checks off the first 3 rules in the rules of 3 (and with a small container, the first 4 and technically you would probably kill animals with the machete so all of them):

You can only live 3 seconds without faith or a will to survive.
You can only live 3 minutes without oxygen or major arterial bleeding.
You can only live 3 hours without core body temperature regulation.
You can only live 3 days without water.
You can only live 3 weeks without food.

Total weight of the entire package is approx 715 grams or 1lb 9oz

Here are the parts used for this kit if you would like to make one for yourself:
Machete: https://amzn.to/3E5ZUAT
sheath w/ sharpening stone: https://amzn.to/3Ireo0A
ferro rod: https://amzn.to/3YR0eLN
metal tin: https://amzn.to/3Ip9rp4
lighter w/ whistle and cordage: https://amzn.to/3YRVjKr

And this is the video with me making the fatwood shavings:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjTJtneLzQw
...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC5V0lJ6Y7c
