It has happened before even in times when Gold was the official money of the US. In 1933 citizens were ordered to turn over their gold to a federal reserve bank due to the US filing for bankruptcy. The banks demanded something in exchange for their bailout loans issued to the US, That was the citizens Gold. Supply has been greatly hindered and we are entering an uncertain time in regards to money printing. Silver and Gold pose a threat to the credibility of the US dollar that's the reason they have implemented taxes on precious metals to hinder the competition.
