Hurricane Ian was the fifth-strongest hurricane ever to hit the United States.<br /><br />Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida, on Wednesday (September, 28) afternoon as a catastrophic Category 4 storm. Ian had winds of 150 mph (240 km/h) as it hit Southwest Florida. Hurricane Ian flooded homes on both the state’s coasts, cut off the only road access to a barrier island, destroyed a historic waterfront pier.
