Garden Update: Demo Day Approaches
Spring has sprung at Small Scale Life, even though we are supposed to get a big snow storm at the end of the week. Since all of the winter snow has melted, we can take another look at what is left of the old garden and survey how hard winter and Karma the Wonder Dog were on the garden beds.

Demolition Day is quickly approaching! Julie and I are getting the new galvanized watering troughs from a big box store this. After much deliberation and thought, we decided to go with 2’ wide x 7’ long by 2 ‘ high watering troughs. We don’t have to build garden beds, install a liner and then fill it with soil. Half the work is already done with the metal troughs, and we would probably burn more time and money than we think building wood and liner beds.

I talk about the plan, dig in the dirt, show the damage to the beds, and talk about the changes I am planning to make to the vertical garden. This might repeat some of the material from an earlier video but there has been a lot of melting, thought and discussion between that video and today’s!

2019 is going to be a fun gardening year!

Background

For those of you who are new to Small Scale Life, I moved into this house in 2017. I inherited two 4’x6’ square foot garden beds that my father-in-law built. Unfortunately, time and wet soil does bad things to wood, and these beds need to be replaced.
Since I am going to rebuild the entire garden area, Julie and I are going to do some big changes to the side yard. We are going to remove the old beds, re-use the soil as much as possible, move a flower bed and create three new 2’x8’ wicking beds (self irrigating planters). The beds will be on a north-south orientation rather than their current east-west orientation, which should work out really well to maximize the sun exposure while not shading out smaller plants.

Thank You

Thanks again for tuning into the Small Scale Life YouTube Channel.
