Their experience instead is that God is far out of reach and they must simply follow some version of morality presented by their denomination in order to inherit eternal life, without realizing any real spiritual benefits or the palpable feeling of God's presence in this life. The main way this feeling of separation occurs is through living a life contradictory to the observance of God's commandments (as Jesus makes so plain in John 14). But most Believers are truly confused about what this means (and rightfully so due to preponderance of contradictory teachings in the "Church"). Satan is very clever and loves to place us in doctrinal double binds traps, where we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. This most often occurs when other people seek to overly influence us to their line of thinking and behavioral parameters that seem righteous but in reality conflict with God's law. Saul of Tarsus very much falls into this category of trickster, and many Believers who have come under his spell exhibit this same form of control over others that causes their "followers" to be out of line with how God is actually leading, and thereby places them in opposition to God, unbeknownst to their victims. These captives then suffer a Stockholm syndrome of sorts which results in love and admiration for their captors while convinced that if they leave, or rather escape, their captors belief system that they would be fighting God Himself, when in fact they are turning their backs on lies to seek the truth. This religious double bind is one of the trickiest to escape, even when the Holy Spirit has put up so many red flags for you to see, but you just ignore them in support of the lie that's been fostered that for some strange reason you still want to believe.
