Wait, iPhone 13 got EXCITING? plus EXCLUSIVE Backstage...
Renders via @Apple_Tomorrow on Twitter
After last year’s iPhone 12 launch, which, in the middle of the biggest disruption to normal life in at least a couple of generations destroyed all expectations thanks to a retro future design, pretty amazing new night camera features, MagSafe charging and Ceramic Shield glass, its understandable that everyone was referring to this year’s iPhone update as the 12S. There were no huge updates on the horizon - maybe adding back Touch ID, of course a faster chip, of course the cameras would get that bit better.

And yet, we hear that Apple has upped their orders with iPhone parts supplier by up to 20% this year, with 90 million iPhones on their initial order. What? This is in a market where Samsung is struggling to sell 12 million of their flagship line.

Well it looks like the A15 based iPhone is going to have a bunch of those little quality of life updates that actually make it really compelling.

The 120Hz, Pro-Motion displays that can dynamically change your screen’s refresh rate will not only make your content and user interface seem smoother and more… I don’t know, real, but also allow you to watch 24 frame per second Hollywood movies at the refresh rate they were intended. They can potentially also drop right down to 1Hz to work as an alway on display option so with an iPhone on your desk or stand, you could be able to glance over and see your notifications. Handy.

The Notch - its finally gone! No, of course its not, but Apple has been able to rearrange the gubbins behind it, moving the speaker grille to the top edge, making it a notch of its own against the metal frame rather than being a full on hole in the display glass. This may also reduce the chance of cracked displays as well as making that notch a little more narrow, allowing the battery percentage to make a welcome comeback.

Round the back though, the camera changes are the biggest changes from the sounds of things. Just as last year’s iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max brought ProRaw photos, capturing more information so you can really play around more in post, and this year it looks like we’re getting Apple’s ProRes - their professional Video codec coming I’d guess just to the Pro iPhones.

Also inherited from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it looks like the whole range will get the sensor shift stabilisation that adjusts the sensor position up to 5000 times per second to avoid blur in your images, compensating for your shakey weak human hands. Its this that has made the Night Mode images so incredible for me, though of course its still terrible for nightclubs and people moving in the frame, giving you just a blurry mess until Apple introduces Subject Stabilisation which just holds dancing people still for the duration of the shot.

It looks li
...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGfmMLrCess
