De acuerdo con la hipótesis de Vespucio, la situación es la siguiente: tenemos en el hemisferio norte una extensa costa identificada como perteneciente al extremo oriental del orbis terrarum o, más concretamente, como el litoral atlántico de Asia, y tenemos, en el hemisferio opuesto, separada de la anterior, otra costa que, descendiendo hacia el polo sur, quedaba postulada como perteneciente a un "nuevo mundo".
