The United States is comprised of a variety of different types of governments and geographical boundaries. There are the individual states, and then within each state, there are counties. Some states have a bunch of smaller counties, like Texas, but then other states have just a handful of counties. Sometimes this is because the state is small, but sometimes it's huge counties, with very few people living in them.
