Dr Sam teaches you about adult hand foot and mouth disease symptoms and what are the most useful hand foot and mouth disease home remedies. <br /><br />WHAT IS HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (HFMD)?<br />HFMD is a common viral infection most often affecting young children, but does occur in adults. It is characterised by blisters on the hands, feet and in the mouth. <br /><br />WHAT CAUSES HFMD?<br />The most common virus that causes Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is Coxsackie virus (CV) A16. Other viruses can also cause it, including:<br />* Enterovirus 71<br />* CVA6<br />* CV A5, A7, A9, A10, B2, and B5<br />* Echovirus<br />* Coxsackie virus <br /><br />WHO GETS HFMD?<br />Hand foot and mouth disease is very infectious, so several members of the same family or a school class may be affected. Outbreaks are most common during the late summer or fall months. Adults and older children with HFMD tend to develop a milder form of the illness compared with younger children. But adults can sometimes have quite severe symptoms.<br /><br />WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HFMD?<br />Mild fever is usually the first sign of hand, foot and mouth disease. This starts about 3 - 5 days after adults have been exposed to the disease.<br />After the fever you can get:<br />* painful red blisters in their mouth<br />* red or fluid-filled blisters that are not itchy or painful - (usually on the palms of hands, or soles of feet)<br />* loss of appetite<br />* a sore throat and mouth<br />* a general feeling of weakness or tiredness<br /><br />WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR HFMD?<br />Paracetamol 1g as needed for fever/pain<br />Ibuprofen 400mg every 4-6 hours or as needed. <br />Have plenty to drink<br />Soft foods such as soups, ice cream, smoothies and mashed potato.<br />For Mouth Pain try:<br />- Lidocaine gel<br />- Benzydamine mouthwash or spray.<br />- Choline salicylate gel (Bonjela®). This cannot be used in children under the age of 16 years. Pregnant women should also not use it.<br />- Warm salty mouthwashes<br /><br />WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR?<br />See a doctor quickly if you can't drink fluids due to a sore mouth, or you are becoming dehydrated.
