Indigenous Protest against Multinationals Plundering Argentina
Indigenous groups and trade unions swarmed the streets of downtown Buenos Aires to protest lithium extraction by multinational companies, which "leave no money in Argentina." New reforms aim to boost lithium mining in Jujuy province, in the middle of the lithium triangle, home to most of the world's lithium deposits, also known as "white gold."<br /> <br />The reforms are expected to accelerate the eviction of Indigenous communities from their territories. The reform threatens more than 350 of Jujuy's 400 indigenous communities, only 12 percent of whom have communal land titles.<br /> <br />"Due to the social crisis, we have been going through with a salary below the poverty line. The people have stood up and said, enough is enough." - said one protester. Meanwhile, the US-based Exar Corporation has invested almost a billion US dollars in mining projects in Jujuy this year.<br /> <br />The protests build on days of heavy clashes in Jujuy province in June against the criminalization of indigenous resistance to extraction by the local right-wing government under Gerardo Morales.
