Its not very often i am working on bee hives in northern kentucky in early February but this winter has me concerned with the unusual number of really warm days above 50 degrees and then followed by really cold snaps. The plants and bees think its spring. I'm going to guess the bees have flown more days than not and my largest bee hive was feeling pretty light considering i went into winter with about 250 lbs of honey on it. So today against my better judgement i took off the top cover and broke the propolis seal of the inner cover for a quick look, added a pollen patty, put the inner cover back on, added a medium box, added 1 quart of 1 to 1 sugar syrup with my brood formula and then spent some time observing them. Back in January i posted a video of them bringing in maple pollen several weeks early and today they are bringing in another type of pollen orange in color. This has me worried because everything is off by 6-8 weeks. So i did these things to give them a bit of spring boost while we have about 4-6 days of warmer above 50 degree temperature forecast just to help get them to the real spring weather. Also, by adding sugar syrup and checking it the next day, you can tell what kind of shape your hive is in without going deep into the hive.
