Some of our ten squirrel babies (read description)
We already have TEN baby squirrels in. Most came in pink and hairless with their eyes still closed. Susan has this to say about the squirrels:
All the little squirrels are are between 4-5 weeks old. Their eyes are open and they are starting to eat some solid foods. Although they sleep most of the time, there are times when they are quite active. How does the mother squirrel keep them safely in the nest? Squeaky had two of her four litters of babies in a large nest box that I made. It was located where I saw it every day and all throughout the day. When they were old enough they would peek out of the little door but they never came out. When they were about 12 weeks old four squirrels that were as big as their mother finally emerged. They ventured farther and farther away from the nest everyday but always came back at night. Eventually they went on their own. After everyone moved away I cleaned out the nest box. It was amazingly clean. Hard to imagine that five squirrels lived in there for three months. I rarely saw her bring food into the nest. How was she able to produce enough milk to feed them and have them grow so big? Squirrel mothers are pretty amazing.
Please consider a donation to help us in our work!
