Great soil for blueberries<br /><br />Peat moss is great for blueberries because they like acidic soil. The mix I used today is 2 parts peat moss and 1 part compost. Peat moss is well draining but also has good moisture retaining qualities. Compost helps to add biology to the new plants, it has moisture retention that will help to keep the peat moss moist (preventing it from going hydrophobic as quickly), and helps to add a natural fertilizer to the planting hole. These nutrients should not burn or injure the roots of the new planting. For this instance the compost has life like worms that will continue to make castings in and around the planting hole.<br /><br />After you plant new items water everything in well so the roots are able to be covered with the new soil mixture. Roots need a loose well draining soil that retains moisture but not with large air pockets.
