Sowing Onions & Lettuce. We are just coming out of winter and it is time to sow some cool weather crops. I am sowing all seeds indoors into module trays. I use a sterile seed starting mix to sow the seeds into. Once sown, I put the modules into a larger tray and water from below. Watering from above can often displace the seeds. Therefore, watering from below prevents the seeds from being displaced. Over several hours, the water that was poured into the bottom tray "wicks up" through the soil, and moistens the area around the seed. After watering the trays, I cover them with the plastic dome lid. Then I place the trays with the modules onto an electric heat mat. The mat warms up and keeps the soil at an even 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I position a grow light above the tray, and try to get the light within a few inches of the tray. The next day I check on the trays to make sure that the modules have wicked enough water up to moisten the soil surface.
