Film Score Scales Ep 9 Thematic Reuse "Yoda's Theme"
Though this is not about any one scale in particular, there is an important lesson here. That is just the title of the series. Reuse of thematic material is a very handy skill to have as a through composed composer. Most film score composers fall into this category with the exception of a few who prefer to use very repetitive music.
Through composed music can be very uplifting and often the glue for these styles is the thematic material and motifs. Late Wagner is a prime example of this. The motif became more important than the form.
John Williams is a very "Motif/Thematic" based composer. Meaning, you will find his little melodic snippets in almost all situations. The original melody could be harmonized in Lydian, but the melody can show up in a very chaotic piece or tense piece in snippets. This is why I am using Yoda's theme as a basic template. This theme appears in its original form a lot, and it appears in forms you may not even recognize as snippets from that melody.
Learning thematic/motif based composing, IMHO, is something people start to do naturally as they grow in their craft. It is often the result of experience. The end result is that you find yourself being able to use very little written melodic content for an enormous amount of musical variations and ideas, including different feels in different pieces of music.
#FilmComposer #YodaTheme #ThemeVariation #MusicMotif #ComposingMusic
...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJif93ECXHs
